Haut-de-Cagnes, Cagnes-Ville, Cros-de-Cagnes: which one are you in?

Cagnes-sur-Mer is made up of three districts that locals name separately: Haut-de-Cagnes, the medieval village on its hill; Cagnes-Ville, the town centre and the railway station; and Cros-de-Cagnes, the old fishing quarter by the sea.

DistrictWhat you’ll find therePickup
Haut-de-CagnesThe Château-Musée Grimaldi, steep lanes, artists’ studiosAt the foot of the village: the lanes are best walked down
Cagnes-VilleThe town centre, the shops, the SNCF railway stationOutside the station or at your address
Cros-de-CagnesThe little fishing harbour, the boats, the beach promenadeOn the seafront, outside the address
Seafront, westThe Côte d’Azur racecourse, the residencesOutside the residence or at the entrance you give
Les CollettesThe Renoir Museum and its olive groveAt the entrance to the estate

Saying “Cagnes” is not enough: a passenger expected “in Cagnes” could be at the top of a medieval hill or down by the water, two kilometres away. The district and the exact address mean no searching around at pickup time.

Five kilometres from the airport: a short ride, a price agreed upfront

As the crow flies, the centre of Cagnes-sur-Mer is 5.5 km from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport: the closest of the five towns Driver, Let’s Go! describes in detail on its site.

Cagnes is not one of Thierry’s four fixed-fare rides (Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, Saint-Tropez): the price is given when you book, depending on the address, and it does not change afterwards. For a ride this short, it is better to ask than to guess.

The route either follows the coast between Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Cagnes or takes the A8 motorway; at rush hour, the seafront road is often the simpler option. For travellers staying in Cagnes and touring the Riviera, hourly hire starts right at the door of your residence.

  • To or from the airport: price given before the ride.
  • To Antibes or Juan-les-Pins: the road carries on through Villeneuve-Loubet.
  • To Vence and Saint-Paul-de-Vence: the road climbs inland from Cagnes.

Haut-de-Cagnes: a medieval village best explored on foot

Haut-de-Cagnes is a fortified hilltop village above the town, crowned by the Château Grimaldi, which now houses a museum.

Its steep lanes, stairways and vaulted passages are explored on foot. For a visit, Thierry drops you as close as possible and picks you up at the same spot at the agreed time; for a departure from a house in the village, arrange a meeting point at the foot of the ramparts — suitcases do not like stairs.

The Château-Musée Grimaldi and the Renoir Museum at Les Collettes, on the other side of town, fit into the same morning: the Riviera museums page puts them in a single day alongside the Fondation Maeght and the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence.

The Renoir Museum and Les Collettes

The Les Collettes estate was Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s last home: the painter spent his final years there, and today the house, the studio and the olive grove are open to visitors as a museum.

It is one of the places that bring visitors from all over the world to Cagnes, often for just half a day, from Nice or from Antibes. By car, it is easy to find: the entrance to the estate is the drop-off point.

For a traveller landing at the airport in the morning, a visit to Les Collettes before heading to the hotel is possible, with the suitcases staying in the boot — mention it when you book so that Thierry can plan for the wait.

Cros-de-Cagnes and the seafront

Cros-de-Cagnes is the town’s old fishing village: a small harbour where the traditional wooden boats, the pointus, are still hauled up onto the pebbles.

The Cagnes seafront is long and straight, lined with apartment residences: this is where many holidaymakers and second-home owners stay. For a pickup, the street number and the name of the residence are enough; the car pulls up outside.

The Cros has kept the feel of a fishing village, with its colourful boats and its terraces along the promenade: a good place for a seafood lunch, which the restaurants page helps you organise without a car.

To the west, the Côte d’Azur racecourse sits on the seafront. On race days the surrounding streets fill up: let Thierry know if your ride falls on a race-meeting day.

The Château-Musée Grimaldi, at the top of Haut-de-Cagnes

The Château Grimaldi, built in the early 14th century by Rainier Grimaldi at the top of Haut-de-Cagnes, is now a municipal museum: you can visit the château’s rooms, a museum devoted to the olive tree and a collection of portraits of the singer Suzy Solidor.

The château looks out over the whole coast, from the Baie des Anges to Cap d’Antibes: its terrace is one of the great viewpoints of Cagnes. The visit pairs well with a stroll through the village and, in the afternoon, with the Renoir Museum at Les Collettes, on the other side of town.

Haut-de-Cagnes drew many artists in the 20th century, and studios and galleries still line its lanes. The village is also a good starting point for the hinterland: Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Vence are only a few kilometres away on the road that climbs from Cagnes.

For a visit starting from Nice or Antibes, three hours of hourly hire (€255) is often enough: drop-off at the foot of the village, waiting time during the visit, then Les Collettes, then the ride back.

The Côte d’Azur racecourse

The Hippodrome de la Côte d’Azur sits on the Cagnes-sur-Mer seafront: it hosts races in winter and evening meetings in summer, drawing a crowd from all along the Riviera.

On race days, the area around the racecourse and the seafront road get busy, especially towards the end of the day. For a ride that passes that way, Thierry allows extra time, and for an outing to the races, the pickup and the return are fixed in advance — bearing in mind that a return after 7 pm is on quote.

Staying in Cagnes-sur-Mer without a car

Cagnes-sur-Mer is a handy base for a Riviera stay: close to the airport, served by the station on the coastal railway line, with residences all along the seafront.

Many visitors rent an apartment here or own a second home. On arrival day, the transfer from the airport is short; on the following days, the train connects Nice and Antibes, and a driver takes over for what the train does not reach: Haut-de-Cagnes, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Vence, the villages of the hinterland.

For owners arriving for the season with plenty of luggage, the front trunk of the Tesla Model Y adds to the rear boot: give the number of suitcases when you book, and Thierry will tell you whether everything fits.

Polygone Riviera and the shops of Cagnes

North of the town, Polygone Riviera is an open-air shopping centre opened in 2015, with its boutiques, its restaurants and artworks along the walkways; it is one of the favourite shopping trips west of Nice.

For a traveller without a car, it is easier to get there by VTC than by public transport, especially on the way back with your arms full. Three hours of hourly hire lets you browse the shops while the car waits, with your purchases in the boot.

In Cagnes-Ville, the town-centre shops and the market are around the station and the pedestrian streets: you are dropped as close as possible and walk the last stretch.

For Cagnes residents heading off on a trip, the ride to the airport is short but often falls at the times when the seafront road gets busy: Thierry suggests a departure time that takes the day into account, rather than relying on the five kilometres as the crow flies.

What Thierry checks before a ride in Cagnes-sur-Mer

In Cagnes, most hiccups come from an incomplete address: five details are enough for the pickup to happen on time.

  • The district

Haut-de-Cagnes, Cagnes-Ville, Cros-de-Cagnes or the seafront: the first question.

  • The meeting point

In Haut-de-Cagnes, a spot at the foot of the village rather than a door at the end of a lane.

  • The residence

On the seafront, the name of the residence and the entrance.

  • The day

On a race day at the racecourse or a big market day, Thierry allows more time.

  • The luggage

3 large suitcases and 2 small ones in the Tesla Model Y; any more, let him know.
